The leader of Sinn Fein has spoken of her relief that she will not need any further treatments following her recent hysterectomy.

Mary Lou McDonald had to withdraw from public life for several weeks this summer due to needing medical care.

Speaking on the Neil Prendeville Show on Cork's RedFM, Mary Lou MacDonald says the stigma around women's health needs to go:

"Far too often, matters that relate to women's health have been a little bit taboo, even these days. All I have is a story of gratitude and great relief, that I have been through the surgery and I've emerged without the need for any other further treatments or therapies. I'm hearing increasingly public voices coming out and talking about these parts of people's lives, these issues in people's health. I think we have reasons to be positive".
