David Cullinane shouted 'Up the Republic, Up the Ra, Tiochaidh ár Lá' at a celebration event in Waterford on Sunday night.
He says his comments were about the past and not the future.
The chanting has come in for criticism, but People Before Profit TD Richard Boyd Barrett isn't overly worried:
