The national executive of the Social Democrats is expected to meet tonight to discuss the leadership election process.
It comes after co-leaders, Róisín Shortall and Catherine Murphy, decided to call it a day.
Both are remaining on as TDs.
The party has four other deputies, including Cork's Holly Cairns, however none has yet declared their intentions.
Kildare Councillor, Bill Clear, was surprised to see the co-leaders go but says the resignations were part of the growth of the party.
"I'm not afraid of change, and this is part of change and the growth of the party. Life goes on, as leaders they're moving on but as TDs they'll still be there.
"A gamut of emotions, but that's life. And as a political party, things will always change."
