The government is being called on to ensure 20% of the housing stock is designated for social housing by 2030.
Social Justice Ireland wants 1.4 billion euro of the upcoming budget dedicated to the provision of over 230,000 social accommodation units in the next 8 years.
12,691 people are currently living in emergency accommodation, including 3,895 children.
Research and policy analyst Suzanne Rogers says this profoundly affects the well-being of families:
"For those families that do find themselves in emergency accommodation, that there'll be a time limit on the length of time that they can be in emergency accommodation. We will be calling for an expansion of the Housing First model to support homeless families as well, so that's where you're putting all of those wraparound supports in place".
