Students will sit the traditional Leaving Cert this summer - with greater choice than usual.
Education Minister Norma Foley will bring this proposal to cabinet this morning.
Students had been calling for a combination of written exams and accredited grades - similar to the past two years.
Solidarity TD, Cork's Mick Barry believes the traditional leaving cert is not the way forward.
"The fact that the Government have chosen to sit on the fence for the entire month of January regarding the Leaving Cert hasn't helped the situation.
"A factor in the anxiety is the fact that students are effectively being forced to compete against each other for a limited number of college places - I don't think that should happen any year, but it certainly should not happen in a pandemic."
