Supermarket chains, smaller retailers and representatives of the grocery industry are being hauled before Government today to explain surging food prices.
Grocery price inflation reached a record 16.3% between November and January, according to research analysts Kantar, way above the level of other price rises.
Junior Minister Neale Richmond who is convening today's talks says Government had the power to introduce price caps on products, but don't want to have to do that.
"We expect the retailers and food producers across the country to lay out what the real figures are.
"We're seriously concerned with the rise in price of groceries across the country, it's affecting every household and it's not acceptable.
"Now that input costs are going down, we want to see when and how prices will go down."
