Talks between teacher unions and the Department of Education are expected to resume today to try and get special education reopened.
Labour TD Aodhan O'Riordain's calling on the Education Minister to stop saying things in public, after a plan to have children back in the classroom was dropped last week.
He also believes it's important the vaccination plan would prioritise those who work in schools.
Deputy O'Riordain hopes any safety concerns over the return of special needs education can be overcome.
"We had a very difficult week last week, but it's important to see what can be achieved.
"Obviously the virus is in many respects out of control, and the death toll is concerning, but at the same time it's always good to talk, even though it's quite clear that mainstream schools won't be back any time soon.
"But it's important that we do whatever we can for those with additional needs as long as it's safe."
