The Tánaiste has hit out at 'vigilante' groups who oppose LGBT+ books in public libraries and say they must be 'very strongly resisted'.

Micheál Martin was speaking in Mallow today following an anti-LGBT+ protest by a group in Kerry yesterday.

Five protestors entered the library in Tralee during a Pride Week event for Children and began shouting their opposition before Gardaí arrived.

Similar protests have also taken place at the library on Grand Parade in the city.

Speaking to RedFM News, Micheál Martin says the era of banning books in Ireland is behind us:

"I despair and I'm dismayed that people would go into a library, upset to peace and tranquillity that people enjoy in a library by violently to taking books off the shelf and destroying property. It's destruction of property. I think it has to be very strongly resisted. It's a form of vigilantism that we have to stop because it's not healthy".
