Micheál Martin gave the Fianna Fáil parliamentary party a positive assessment of the situation last night.
Talks will continue between the European Union and the UK in London today, with only four weeks to go until the transition period ends.
Fianna Fáil MEP Barry Andrews says it's far from certain there'll be a deal, with fisheries and other issues still outstanding:
"What makes me pessimistic about it is that Boris Johnson has consistently put his own interests and those of the Conservative Party first. The problem with the deal is that it's going to be messy. It's going to be a thin Brexit deal on trade and only a few other issues, and it's going to involve compromises. And he will then have to own the consequences of those compromises."
