Some parts of Ireland's cities still aren't as safe as they were before Covid, according to the Taoiseach.

Leo Varadkar says there'll need to be tougher sentencing on public order offences and more Gardaí on the street.

But he conceded it'll be very difficult for the target of 1,000 new Gardaí this year to be reached.

Leo Varadkar has admitted cities like Dublin are not as safe as they once were:

"That's not something that we can accept. A lot of people say to me that they feel that our cities kind of deteriorated during the pandemic period and have never really come back to the level of safety that they were. And we have to fix that because it's a basic entitlements that people should feel safe walking at night in our towns and cities. And we shouldn't be telling people that X area Y area is dangerous and you shouldn't go there. That's totally the wrong approach from my point of view."
