The Taoiseach says the government do not anticipate the need to ration fuel this winter at the moment and says the rising cost of fuel and energy is a more immediate concern.
Micheál Martin was speaking in Cork following a meeting of the Emergency Energy Group earlier this week where the rationing of oil and gas products was discussed in light of the continuing war in Ukraine.
The National Oil Reserves Agency holds around 85 days-worth of oil including home heating oil which can be used if there is any shortage.
Speaking to RedFM News, Taoiseach Micheál Martin says measures to tackle the rising cost of fuel and gas will be part of a cost of living package in the budget at the end of next month.
"We have to prepare for all eventualities, but we do have reserves and so on.
"In the budget which will be towards the end of September we will be looking at measures that can deal with the medium to longer term issues around costs for people, but also in terms of the cost of living package that will be parallel with the budget that we can do something immediately for people to alleviate pressures in this calendar year and before the end of the year."
