The Taoiseach says the triggering of article 16 of the Northern Ireland protocol would be reckless and irresponsible.
Micheál Martin was speaking in Cork today as negotiations continue between Europe and the UK regarding a post-Brexit trade deal.
The Northern Ireland Protocol allows goods to flow freely between Ireland and Northern Ireland.
Article 16 is part of the protocol and can be triggered by either side to force negotiations to begin.
Speaking to RedFM News, Taoiseach Micheál Martin says talks of a looming trade war are premature:
"We should be aware of self fulfilling prophecies as well, in that sense. So I think nothing, as I say is certain in that regard because we've been here before, and negotiations are still underway. There's still engagement between the European Union and the UK. As I said in the DI last week, and I sent over my comments. I think it would be reckless and irresponsible to trigger Article 16. All parties need to take on board the fundamental importance of the relationship between the European Union in the United Kingdom and the relationship between Irish government and the British government in terms of what has happened over the last 30 years."
