British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will try to end the current impasse over dinner in Brussels.

UK and EU negotiators have hit a roadblock on a trade deal with time running out before the end of year deadline.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin says it's difficult to see how they'll find a way forward, "It is on a knife's edge, it's 5050, as I said, there are very difficult issues around level playing field and around fisheries," he said. "I met and engaged with the fishing organisations, have no doubt that we want to preserve and support our fishing industry in the strongest possible manner and as effectively as we can".
