An Independent TD is hitting out at EIR's plans to introduce an additional cost for sending out bills in the post.
TD Sean Canney says the move is 'disappointing'.
He says a €5.99 charge every month, which amounts to an annual increase of €71.88 - for receiving a paper bill - will start from January.
Deputy Canney says older people who rely on the telephone to communicate will be worst affected:
"I think it's terrible that a company like EIR, or a corporate global company like that, would actually see fit to do something at this time. We have to understand that the customer's worst effectors will be older people on fixed income and who rely on the telephone as a means of communicating and also for security and the homes and they're now being penalised for not doing their business online."
