Levies and taxes on fuel should be eliminated or substantially reduced on a temporary basis, according to a TD.
This comes after the Society of the Irish Motor Industry issued advice to motorists on how to reduce spending on petrol.
Avoiding unnecessary trips and removing heavy items from the car to lighten the load, are among the tips.
Sligo-Leitrim TD, Marc MacSharry, says the government should take more action on taxes:
"What we're talking about is window dressing in terms of what really needs to be done, in terms of a tangible effort by government. We seem to be able to find money everywhere when it comes to impressing our international contemporaries. It's focused on seeing if we can provide resources to look after our own people on this occasion."
