Householders will get the money off in March to ease the cost of electricity bills this winter.

It will include VAT, so will be worth €113.50 to each home.

Energy prices have risen sharply, and there are fears they could go even higher as tensions build on the Russia/Ukraine border.

Green Party leader Eamon Ryan says the unpredictability surrounding Russia means further action on the cost of fuel could be needed:

"We made a series of initiatives in terms of increasing the social welfare provisions, the fuel allowance, and a number of other tax and other changes to support people on particularly at risk of fuel poverty. But we need to go beyond that and we may have to go further and they will have to watch an evolve, see how this crisis evolves."
