The government is 'essentially cutting' the minimum wage due to the high rates of inflation

That's according to a Cork Solidarity TD, who will put forward a motion in the Dail tomorrow to increase it.

The minimum wage went up to 10 euro 50 cent an hour at the start of this year.

However Deputy Mick Barry believes it needs another increase:

"The average increase in the minimum wage across Europe this year is 6%. Which is more than double what the government have introduced here, with those governments under pressure and realizing to an extent that if you don't meet the rate of inflation effectively, yes, you are cutting the minimum wage."
