That same afternoon, the news broke that 4 people were arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence in Mallow over a 24-hour period.
18 people have died on Irish roads between Christmas and New Year's since 2015, with drink-driving, speeding, and not wearing a seatbelt the most common denominators in fatal road accidents.
Here in Cork, 22 people have died in road traffic accidents so far in 2020.
