Tendering for the construction of a long-discussed elective hospital in Cork will get underway towards the end of this year.
Health Minister Stephen Donnelly gave the update at an Oireachtas Health Committee meeting yesterday in response to a question from Cork TD Colm Burke.
The Government announced in December of last year that the new hospital would be located on the site of St Stephen's Hospital in Glanmire.

A man remains in a critical condition following an explosion at a roof at Stryker in Carrigtwohill.
The incident happened at about 1pm on Tuesday afternoon that saw the 41 year old suffer severe burns, he underwent emergency surgery at Cork University Hospital and remains on life support.

The Health Minister has told an Oireachtas Health Commitee that the death of a ten year old Cork girl who contracted Strep-A in 2019 was heartbreaking and says he will investigate whether paediatric ICU services in Cork are an option if a clinical case can be made for one.
Vivienne Murphy from Millstreet died at Temple Street Hospital in Dublin in 2019.
The schoolgirl was initially treated at Cork University Hospital and was eventually transfered to Temple Street for surgery due to the lack of a critical care unit for children in Cork.
Vivienne's parents said the transfer took hours and say it doesn't make sense that Cork doesn't have a paediatric ICU.

36% of people working in childcare are actively seeking to leave the sector, a new report has found.
The Early Years Staffing and Pay Survey, conducted by Siptu, found 38 per cent of managers found it difficult to hire and recruit staff due to low pay and conditions.
Over 2,100 people took part in the survey which was carried out in late March.
