On-call firefighters are escalating their strike action.

After what they say is a failure by Government to respond to their legitimate concerns, SIPTU has announced all retained fire stations in Ireland will "go dark" at 8am this Saturday.

It means the stations will continue to attend emergencies but will have zero communications with local authority radio control centres.

SIPTU says, if their demands for better pay and conditions still go unanswered by Saturday 19th August, they will start shutting one station in each county every week.

The preliminary trial of a man charged with the murder of a Cork bishop gets underway today in the United States.

61 year old Carlos Medina pleaded not guilty to the murder of Bishop David O'Connell at his home in Los Angeles in February.

Bishop O'Connell, aged 69 and originally from Brooklodge, was found at his home at Hacienda Drive after being shot a number of times.

Rents in Cork have increased sharply this quarter, according to the latest figures from the Daft.ie rental report.

According to the report, Cork City rents have risen by 7.4% in the past year and the average rent is now €1793.

In the rest of Cork, market rents were on average 8.8% higher in the second quarter of 2023 than a year previously.

Eris - a more transmissible variant of the Omicron strain - has been detected in Ireland.

More than 60 cases of Covid-19 have been confirmed in Cork in the past two weeks
