Only three people faced prosecution for paying for sex with a prostitute last year.

The DPP decided to prosecute 23 people for the offence in 2020, and 29 the previous year.

It became illegal to buy sexual services from a prostitute in April 2017 - and 62 people have faced court action for the crime since then.

Barrister Morgan Shelley says last year's figure is extremely low - but the other numbers are easier to understand:

"This is a very difficult crime to catch people for, especially now that a huge amount of the industry has moved online. So all of these transactions are being arranged in an online forum. And so it's very difficult to intercept the communications between members of the public and brothel organisers."
