The former Republic of Ireland football manager has died at the age of 85
The former Leeds and England defender had been diagnosed with lymphoma in the last year and was also battling dementia.
Known affectionately as Big Jack, the Newcastle native brought Ireland to Euro 88, Italia 90 and USA 94.
Charlton's last game in charge of the Republic of Ireland was in 1995 for a Euro 96 play-off again the Netherlands in Anfield which ended in defeat for Ireland with two goals to one.
The Newcastle native had his own victories as a player, winning a World Cup medal in 1966 for England. He holds a joint club record at Leeds for most appearances, having played 773 matches for the team in his 21-year career at the club before retiring in 1973.
Following his death, his family released a statement to announce the sad news:
"Jack died peacefully on Friday, July 10 at the age of 85. He was at home in Northumberland, with his family by his side.
"As well as a friend to many, he was a much-adored husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
"We cannot express how proud we are of the extraordinary life he led and the pleasure he brought to so many people in different countries and from all walks of life.
"He was a thoroughly honest, kind, funny and genuine man who always had time for people.
"His loss will leave a huge hole in all our lives but we are thankful for a lifetime of happy memories."
