Tributes are being paid to the feminist campaigner and journalist Nell McCafferty who has died.

She passed away at a Donegal nursing home in the early hours of this morning at the age of 80.

Nell McCafferty became a journalist in her 20's, wrote many books and was a founding member of the Irish Women's Liberation Movement.

She became an outspoken advocate for women's rights, the poor and for people who suffered injustice.

Taoiseach Simon Harris says Nell McCafferty was fierce, fearless and fiery who wasn’t afraid to enter every battle for gay and women’s rights.

Northern Ireland's First Leader Michelle O'Neill says she will be greatly missed:

"A proud daughter of Derry and a woman who was very much a trailblazer  in every sence of the word. A proud feminist. a civil rights campaigner who used her voice to promote equality and fight injustices right across our society."
