A triple-murder trial won't go ahead next Wednesday after the defendant died in jail yesterday.
Sameer Syed was charged with murdering his wife and two children, aged 6 and 11, in Rathfarnham in Dublin in October 2020.
He was on remand in Midlands Prison in Portlaoise, where he took his own life yesterday.
Criminal barrister Barry Ward says the murder trial can't go ahead next week:
"Once the defendant in any criminal case is deceased, there will be a conclusion to the criminal proceedings. They are still in existence until such time as the court deems them to be otherwise, but there can be no other procedure other than that the prosecution will ask the court to terminate the proceedings."
