The US government and a large number of states have sued Facebook, accusing it of abusing its power to create a monopoly.
America's Federal Trade Commission claims the social media giant's crushed its rivals by buying Instagram and Whatsapp.
Facebook itself has denied anti-competitive behaviour, and labelled the lawsuit 'revisionist history.'
The Irish Independent's technology editor, Adrian Weckler, says Facebook has a monopoly in Ireland.
"It's utterly dominant. WhatsApp is a utility, it's used by most adults who have a smartphone in Ireland - so is Facebook.
"Instagram is used by about 50% of adults in Ireland, so even here they're completely woven in to daily life."
