Rent measures announced in the Budget will have very little impact for students, according to the USI.

The union representing students says it plans to go ahead with its walkout on October 13th, as many will be in the same position they were in before Tuesday.

Student fees for this year have been cut by €1,000, while SUSI recipients will receive a once off double payment under plans announced this week.

But USI president, Beth O'Reilly, says the proposed tax credit for renters won't apply for many attending college.

"You have to have a property registered with the RTB to avail of the tax credit.

"For students who are in digs they won't be able to claim that tax credit as it's not registered, or for any students with landlords who just tend not to register properties, that means that most students won't be able to avail of this."
