Vigils in remembrance of Ashling Murphy are taking place in the city, county and around the country today.

The killing of the 23 year old teacher from Offaly has shocked the nation and led to calls for more to be done to prevent gender based violence.

A number of vigils took place yesterday including in Tullamore where Ashling was killed on Wednesday.

In Cork, a walk around the Atlantic Pond is taking place this hour while there will be a standout on Patrick Street at 2 o'clock.

The Sexual Violence Centre Cork held a candle lit vigil outside their offices in the city yesterday evening.

Speaking to RedFM News, Mary Crilly says she is stunned by the incident:

"Well I think the message today hopefully is to the family, in that we're all behind them and the whole country is there with them and shouldering them and, you know, really sympathising with them and really shocked. I think that's what today is about. And I often think about those school kids. I don't know how somebody in First Class would comprehend or be able to deal with a teacher who they were two days ago, all of a sudden now she's dead in such a violent kind of way. So I think today is just, kind of, a quiet kind of silent, 'We're really sorry this happened and we're all behind you'. But then after that, we have to keep going. We have to stand up. We have to be counted."
