The Taoiseach is denying the waiving of school transport fees was a mistake.
It's reported Tánaiste Leo Varadkar privately told his party some sort of fee should have been maintained to avoid the service becoming oversubscribed.
The Irish Daily Mail says he suggested the government should instead have looked at changing voluntary contribution schemes to save parents money.
Thousands of children have been left without school bus places due to demand for the service.
But Taoiseach Micheál Martin doesn't agree with the Tánaiste.
"I would not agree with that. It's certainly something we did on a cost of living premise.
"Yes, it is oversubscribed, but thousands of people are now availing of public transport, which in terms of a more medium term climate change agenda is a good thing.
"What we were doing was trying to use the cost of living to do two things - reduce costs for people, but also start bedding in new ways of behaviour."
