Ireland still has a long way to go when it comes to dealing with domestic incidents of violence or abuse.

That's according to Women's Aid, after Daniel Murtagh was handed a life sentence for the murder of Nadine Lott.

She died in hospital after her ex-boyfriend subjected her to a savage beating in her apartment in Co Wicklow in 2019.

It happened three years after they broke up.

Sarah Benson, CEO of Women's Aid, says attitudes to domestic abuse must change.

"Putting the word 'domestic' in front of violence, or abuse, or incident, still in the public mind and unfortunately amongst some - but not all - the important actors in our criminal justice system, does seem to minimise it.

"We seek to excuse it, we seek to explain it, whereas actually - abuse is abuse is abuse.

"In these cases it should be treated as an aggravated situation."
