A new Bill aimed at ending wage discrimination against young workers is set to be launched today.
The proposal from People Before Profit would allow for all earning the minimum wage to receive 100% of this regardless of their age.
The national minimum wage is €11.30 for people aged 20 and over, but for under 20s, the legal minimum wage is as low as €7.91 per hour.
People Before Profit TD Paul Murphy says we need to legislate for equal access to the full minimum wage regardless of age.
"There's no. basis to justify paying young people less than the minimum wage.
"These people are doing the exact same work in their workplace as their colleagues, but as it currently stands they are legally allowed to be even less than the minimum wage
"I think that's completely unjust - it's exploitation."
