A former Lord Mayor of the City says the robot trees designed to clean the air in the city are a waste of taxpayers money and need to be taken down.

Over €400,000 of public money was spent to install The CityTree devices which cost around €18,000 a year to run.

A recent study by University College Cork found the "Robotrees" which are meant to improve air quality across the city, proved "inconclusive."

Colm Kelleher was Lord Mayor of the City at the time the trees were installed over two years ago.

Speaking to RedFM News, Councillor Colm Kelleher says the trees need to be dismantled:

We've two and a half years of reports and there was a suggestion made of another 6 months. And we would re-valuate in six months time, that's only a waste of more public money in my opinion, you know what I mean? We know they don't work inconclusive for the last 2 and a half years. It's effectively a nice way of saying "it doesn't work." So look, cut our save the city money going forward, in maintenance and power and explore what avenues can be explored in relation to dismantling them"
