Clampdowns on households which avoid paying the TV licence are to be explored as part of plans going to Cabinet this week.

The fee is expected to stay at the 160 euro price.

A long-awaited decision on revised funding models for RTE is expected on Wednesday when the Media Minister Catherine Martin presents a memo to Cabinet.

It's expected the plan will cite the need for 'additional compliance measures', as around 1 in 6 households avoid paying the TV licence fee.

Technological ways of identifying dodgers are being examined - with a first-time offender liable to a fine of one thousand euro.

The three-year funding plan will also see An Post continue to collect the fee, with strengthened powers in the hopes of boosting revenue.

The 'hybrid' model will also include exchequer funding, but it's not clear how much that will be.
