The Housing Minister has denied auto-enrolment pensions are being put in place to help people pay rent in retirement.

Reports this week suggested extra pension amounts were needed as many people will never have the chance to buy their own home.

Auto-enrolment will see everyone without a pension entered into one automatically in 2024.

Housing Minister Darragh O'Brien says the programme is not about lining the pockets of landlords:

"I know that was the way in which it was reported. Auto-enrolment is not being brought forward to deal with that issue. I've been talking to someone who's worked in pensions for a number of years. We've been talking and successive governments have talked about auto-enrolment for 25 years, because two thirds of people in the private sector have no provision for their retirement at all."
