The Irish Blood Transfusion Service says it needs 12,000 donations over the next four weeks.
The country's blood supply has been negatively impacted since the start of the year due to the outbreak of flu and back to back storms.
The IBTS says since the New Year they have had to manage the limited blood supply available across the health service..
Speaking to RedFM News Dr Andrew Godfrey, Medical and Scientific Director of the IBTS, says a pre amber alert has already been issued to hospitals about blood stocks
"If the shortage worsens we may have to proceed to an amber phase, where we priotirise the available blood for the patients most in need.
"If we need to go to amber we may see a reduction in planned or elective surgery, but at the moment this is a pre-amber alert, this is an alert to the hospitals that we are running low, and that we shouldn't have any direct impact at the moment."
