Around 100,000 people are estimated to have spent the night in emergency shelters following a huge earthquake in Japan.
Over 40 people are known to have died in the seven-point-six tremor - which has triggered multiple aftershocks.
Tsunami warnings have now been downgraded to "advisories".
But the Japanese prime minister, Fumio Kishida, warns rescuers are facing a battle to save lives:
"Very large scale of damage has been confirmed so far, including numerous human casualties, building collapses, and fires. We have been making every effort to gather information on the situation, but due to the roadblocks, it has been extremely difficult to enter the northern part of the Noto Peninsula".
