Lava has been spewing from a two-mile crack in the ground in Iceland - after a volcano erupted.

Four thousand people have been evacuated from the southwestern fishing town of Grindavik,  which is near the country's capital Reykjavik.

In 2010, an eruption from a different volcano grounded flights across Europe over fears ash could damage airplane engines.

Icelandic volcanologist Haraldur Sigurdsson explains why flights are not expected to be disrupted this time:

"These are fountains of magma. They're not caused by explosions. They're caused by the pressure of the magma moving up, so it's not an explosive eruption. It's not going to impact aviation".
