Michael Martin says he intends to remain focused "on where the general public are" and remain as Fianna Fail leader in 2024.
He has been the leader of the party since January 2011.
But the Tánaiste could come under pressure if his party has disappointing Local and European election results next year.
Micheál Martin has explained why he thinks he has been Fianna Fail leader for so long:
"The basic advice I would give anybody is to keep focused on the issues and on the policies, and keep focused on the people out there who elected you. Not to get caught up in the bubble. And there'll be highs and there'll be lows and there'll be pressures, but you've got to keep focused on the issues of the day, on policy, and on where the general public are".
