Ireland is on course to exceed housing completion targets for this year - according to a new report.
EuroConstruct has forecast construction output will have grown by 3.2 percent this year, and 4.4 percent in 2024.
31,000 housing completions are estimated for 2023 - exceeding the Housing For All target of 29,000.
Director for BNP Paribas Real Estate, John McCartney says the figures paint a positive picture:
"It's been coming for a while actually. If we go back to last year, we surpassed our housing targets by 21%. This year, it looks as if we're going to beat the targets by a further 10%. Then moving forward, according to EuroConstruct, anyway, next year we will certainly be on target so I think it's good news".
Local authorities need to have more land available after 2026 to meet their housing targets.
That's according to The Housing Agency, which is holding a conference today about managing land to improve the supply of affordable housing.
Its Chief Executive, Bob Jordan says they will discuss how best to do this:
"First, we need to look at it in a very long term way. We need to look at the the amount of land that we need to produce our housing targets. And we need to make sure there's an sufficient pipeline in place to ensure there are no delays in housing construction. And I suppose what we'd be doing at the conference was looking at what worked well in the past in Ireland in terms of land management, and at what hasn't gone so well".
