More than half of the Irish public believe that aviation fuel should be taxed as much as fuel for any other mode of transport’ with just 9 per cent strongly disagreeing.
The findings contained in a RedC Poll found support for heavily taxing private jets was at 79 per cent with only 5 per cent disagreeing.
Tony Lowes, Director of Friends of the Irish Environment says the findings are a welcome sign the Irish public is increasingly aware of the environmental impact of flying':
"We're all aware that we need a "Loss And Damage" fund to deal with what's arising from climate. The idea of putting a tenner on everybody's aircraft flight which would go directly to that "Loss And Damage" fund - I think it's something people might understand and that people might support more than if it was just being used for any other thing."
