Recount requested in Cork North Central

A recount has been requested in Cork North Central.

Labour's Eoghan Kenny looked to have taken the fifth and final seat, however with just 35 votes separating him and People Before Profit Solidarity's Mick Barry, Barry has requested a recount which is due to get underway this morning.

Fine Gael's Colm Burke and Ken O'Flynn of Independent Ireland took the third and fourth seats last night, joining Sinn Féin's Thomas Gould and Fianna Féil's Padraig O'Sullivan.

In Cork South Central, all seats have now been filled.

Jerry Buttimer of Fine Gael and Padraig Rice of the Social Democrats took the final seats, joining Táiniste Micheal Martin, his Fianna Fáil party colleague Seamus McGrath and Sinn Féin's Donnchadh O Laoghaire.

Ten TDs were elected at Mallow GAA complex in the early hours and into the afternoon yesterday.

Michael Collins, Holly Cairns and Christopher O’Sullivan were re-elected for Cork South West, while Aindrias Moynihan, Michael Moynihan and John Paul O’Shea will represent Cork North West for the next five years.

James O’Connor was the first elected to be elected in Cork East followed later in the day by Pat Buckley, Noel McCarthy and Liam Quaide who were all elected on the 12th and final count.

An emotional James O’Connor spoke to RedFM News after he retained his seat for Fianna Fáil in Cork East.

"I'm just very grateful that I'm back and elected again. I'm incredibly appreciative of the people of Cork East, I love this consituiencey and I cannot wait to get back to Leinster House and continue on with the work.

"I started my political career with Micheál Martin, we spoke a number of times yesterday. He's in a very good position to be once again be Taoiseach of the country, another Cork Taoiseach which we're all very delighted with here today."

Outgoing Health Minister Stephen Donnelly has lost his seat in Wicklow.

Fine Gael's Edward Timmins took the fourth and final spot in the constituency.

161 TDs have been elected to the 34th Dail so far, with counting set to resume this morning.

12 seats are yet to be filled.

Green Party Leader Roderic O'Gorman held onto his seat in Dublin West last night, becoming the only party member to do so.
