There's a call on Ryanair boss Michael O'Leary to take back comments criticising teachers.

The Teachers Union of Ireland is making the call, after he said he preferred accountants to teachers in Government.

Michael O'Leary told Fine Gael candidate Peter Burke's weekend campaign event, he wouldn’t employ teachers to "go out and get things done."

Teachers Union of Ireland General Secretary Michael Gillespie says Fine Gael must invest in education and reject his comments.

"We would welcome the fact that they've been distancing themselves from the comments.

"Obviously we hope that Fine Gael realise that teachers have been doing a very, very good job in Ireland, despite the fact there's been a lack of investment and that we've got the largest class sizes in Europe.

"We want Fine Gael with strong education polices that will show we will have investment in education and that we will have smaller class sizes."
