Two new roles are set to be introduced within the Defence Forces, in an effort to improve women's safety, and increase diversity.
Defence Minister Simon Coveney says a judge led process will determine how they'll implement 'cultural change' in the armed forces.
It comes as government officially approved an action plan today, which will see the defence budget increase by €400 million.
Minister Coveney says there needs to be a transformational change in culture, within the armed forces:
"We set up a judge led independent process to look at these issues. I'll get an interim report from that judge for the end of this month, and we'll have a full report before the end of the year in terms of recommendations which we will then obviously take on board and implement. We start the process for recruiting immediately, a civilian head of transformation for the defense forces who will be reporting directly into the Chief of Staff and also a civilian head of HR."
