The National Public Health Emergency Team is meeting today to discuss the number of children missing school because they're close contacts.

Over 12,000 pupils are currently absent because they've been in contact with a confirmed case.

The CMO has said health officials expect to soon be in a position to change isolation requirements for schoolchildren.

Public Health Professor at DCU, Anthony Staines, thinks the policy should remain unchanged until the majority of school children are vaccinated.

"We should have the majority of secondary school age children vaccinated maybe by the end of October.

"The companies are applying for approval for their vaccines in primary school age children.

"Pfizer announced yesterday they were applying for approval for their vaccine for children aged six months up."
