The booster vaccine programme has come at just the right time, according to Nursing Homes Ireland.
Nursing home residents and those over 80 will be offered a 3rd vaccine from Monday.
Any additional jabs will be offered to healthcare workers who have not yet received a dose.
Chief Executive of Nursing Homes Ireland Tadhg Daly says the roll out coincides with the seasonal flu jab.
"There's a dual programme of vaccination going on. The flu vaccine is obviously annual, and that's being offered separately to the booster vaccination.
"We do know from the clinicians that booster dose can be given at the same time or an interval.
"The only qualification there is that the booster jab and the flu jab should be given in separate arms."
