Parents of adult children living at home are being urged to charge them rent for their own good.
The housing crisis, covid and spiralling rental costs have led to more and more people in their 20's and 30's returning to live with their parents.
Despite rising interest rates and higher energy costs many parents feel uncomfortable asking their adult offspring to pay up.
Mother of five and Irish Times writer Jen Hogan says you'd actually be doing your children a favour.
"I actually can't believe this is up for discussion. I think it's page one of being an adult. If you're working, you pay your way so I know it's always a little bit more complicated and parents can feel a responsibility to their children - but you're still their parents. You're maybe just even helping them to realise this is what adults are this about. I would not see any issue whatsoever in expecting an adult child, living at home, to make some sort of contribution towards the household".
