The planned M20 Cork to Limerick road looks set to be tolled.
A motorway with barrier free distance based tolling has been recommended to link the two cities which is estimated to cost over 1 billion euro.
The planned motorway is expected to be 5 times safer than the current N20 single carriageway and it could reduce journey times by 30 minutes.
Fianna Fáil Councillor Gearoid Murphy says the current road isn't fit for purpose:
"They found a motorway will be five times safer than what is already there. And that's what it really comes down to road safety. It's the biggest imperative in this project. The current road isn't fit for purpose."
