Appeals To Taoiseach To Commission National Commemorative Statue Of Michael Collins And Other Civil War Leaders

The Taoiseach is facing growing calls to commission a national commemorative statue of Michael Collins and other Civil War leaders.

The Central Bank has already issued a coin to commemorate his role as finance minister, while An Post are set to issue a stamp later this year to honour his role as a Post Office clerk.

The Irish Examiner is reporting today that Junior Minister Patrick O’Donovan, says that the OPW can’t commission a statue unless asked to by the Department of the Taoiseach.

He confirmed that, as of now, there are no such requests.

The debate comes just weeks ahead of the 100th anniversary of Michael Collins’ assassination at Béal na Bláth in West Cork.
