At least 6 dead in New Zealand hostel fire

At least six people have died following a fire at a four-storey hostel in New Zealand’s capital, Wellington.

Some of the guests have reported having to jump out of windows to escape.

52 people have so far been confirmed to have made it out, but others are unaccounted for.

The country’s Prime Minister, Chris Hipkins, says it could take some time to determine how many have died.

“It is an absolute tragedy. It is an horrific situation.

“In the fullness of time of course there will  be a number of investigations into how it happened and why it happened, but for now the focus clearly has to be on dealing with the situation.”
