The average age of first-time mothers in Ireland has risen to almost 32 years of age.

For all mums, the average age was 33.3 according to new CSO figures.

Consultant Obstetrician and gynaecologist and Former Master of the Rotunda Hospital, Professor Sam Coulter-Smith, says there are a number of factors;

"We're seeing women into their 40s, and well into their 40s having having babies now, probably down to a mix of social and financial factors. Women have control over their own fertility, contraception is widely available and there are far fewer teen pregnancies which is good. However it was on the downside, couples are are renting for longer."
