A health professor's calling for the government to develop a clearer plan on how to get Ireland completely free of Covid-19.

There's been a low number of cases of the virus across the country recently.

Just 14 cases and three deaths were confirmed yesterday.

But DCU health professor Anthony Staines is concerned the rate isn't going down to zero.

"I wonder if we may need a more coherent plan with a very clear target in bringing it down to zero.

"I've noticed that Scotland has declared in the last few days that it is its objective, and there's a very active discussion in Northern Ireland following a newspaper article from Gabriel Scally.

"So I think it's time that we revived the discussion here as to whether that's what we want to do in the south of Ireland."
